Why Subfloor Prep Matters in Charleston
South Carolina's humidity causes wood to expand and contract more than in drier climates. Proper subfloor preparation — leveling, moisture barriers, acclimation time — is what separates a floor that lasts 20 years from one that warps in two. JTB doesn't skip steps.
Common Questions
What flooring holds up best in Charleston's humid climate?
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is hard to beat in the Lowcountry — it's waterproof, dimensionally stable in high humidity, and easy to maintain. Tile is also excellent for bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways. Engineered hardwood works well too, but solid hardwood needs careful subfloor prep and a stable conditioned space.
How long does flooring installation take?
Most rooms install in 1–3 days once the subfloor is prepped. A whole-home replacement is typically a 1–2 week project depending on square footage, transitions, trim work, and material acclimation.
Do I need to remove furniture before you start?
We can move furniture room-to-room as we go if needed, but the cleanest path is to clear large rooms ahead of install day. Closets, appliances, and tricky pieces — we'll talk through that during the walk-through.
Can you install flooring over my existing floors?
Sometimes — LVP and laminate can float over level, sound subfloors. But if the existing floor is uneven, has moisture issues, or is past its useful life, we'll recommend taking it up. Skipping that step usually creates problems down the road.
